My paintings arrive, by invitation, from the unconscious stream. Like dreams or Tarot cards, with layered meanings, these playful images ask the viewer to spend some time, and to engage in dialogue with them. The stories you see may be far different from mine.

I make spontaneous marks and scribbles in purple paint on the blank canvas, then begin to fill in colors. After several sessions of joyful, mindless painting, an image suggests itself. As in the process of recalling a dream, I take a thread and pull it gently, until a whole picture coalesces, and a story begins to unfold. It's a process I enjoy, both for the surprise, and the personal meaning each painting may contain.

I grew up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, attended Mount Holyoke College, and graduated with Honors in Studio Art. I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for twenty years, developing a career in Advertising, then relocated to the Oregon coast in 1989, to focus on my art. Known then by my full name, Jane Luana Stauffer, my landscape work in pastel and acrylic received wide exposure in galleries and juried exhibitions. I was awarded solo shows at the Coos Art Museum, Oregon State University, and the Governor's Office, as well as inclusion in the Northwest Poets and Artists Calendar. My work is in private collections world-wide.

In 2000 I moved to the Big island of Hawaii. After a two year sabbatical, the series of paintings shown here began to emerge. Like postcards from my own inner journey, they provide clues and insight into aspects of my life which may have remained hidden to me, were it not for the wonder of artistic expression.

                                                                                    Mahalo for visiting, and aloha!
